World Hijab Day: Lagos Secretariat Mosque Imam, chairman advocate freedom of use of hijab
The Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque (LSCM) Chief Imam Mutohir Adam, has advocated the need for the free use of hijab by female Muslims at all times and places across the country.
Imam Adam spoke on Friday during the collation of Muslim Women Organisations sensitization campaign on the use of hijab at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque on Friday to canvass the importance of the use of hijab as ordained by Allah for Muslim women.
Emphasizing the need to respect and honor women in hijab, Imam Adam said it is the injunction of Allah and also freedom of choice is religion; hence, there must be an end to discrimination and humiliation against women in hijab in all parts of the country.
He said, “We Muslims have chosen Islam, so we should have the right to practice our religion as ordained by Allah. We should have freedom to practice our faith, we are not asking anyone to use the hijab, we are Muslims and we are using it, so there shouldn’t be any form of intimidation on this, we are all Nigerians, and hijab is our way of life, it is the dressing code Allah has decreed for our women, we will continue to use, I don’t see reason why Muslims wearing should be intimidated and persecuted for obeying Allah’s injunction.
We want to encourage our sisters to be bold and confident as Muslims because Allah has honored us, and we are not ashamed to be Muslims; as Muslims, we are peace lovers; we desire good for everyone and our society.
Also speaking during the sensitization tour, the chairman of the mosque, Eng AbdulHafeez Toriola, said the hijab dignified Muslim women and serves as a protection at all times.
Eng Toriola said the World Hijab Day celebration is a day set aside to encourage those using the hijab and also emphasize its importance so every Muslim woman can start adoring herself in the hijab as ordained by Allah.
He said World Hijab Day is a day set aside to celebrate and encourage the women wearing the hijab to continue on the part as well as encouraging others to start using it as ordained by Allah. They are more relevant and more protected in society today; aside from their dressings, you will see character and well-behaved culture in their ways of life.
It is a continuous engagement and we appreciate the government for the listening ear, we have urged them to continue.
Leader of the Muslim body team, Hajia Mutiat Orolu-Balogun, said the group set out to cnqvanse and seek support for all women wearing the hijab against any form of intimidation.
She said the day will be celebrated on Saturday, 1st February 2025, starting with a peaceful walk from the Allen Avenue Junction to the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque to ensure the message of freedom of choice of religion and use of the hijab gets across to all corners and crannies of the society.
