Prestigious Eko Club Vows to Enhance Humanitarian Interventions; Upholds Lagos Cultural Heritage as it Marks 50th Anniversary
The leadership of the prestigious Eko Club has expressed its commitment to improving humanitarian interventions for vulnerable members of society while also upholding the cultural heritage of Lagos State.
This announcement comes as the Club prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee Anniversary with a series of grand events.
Former President of the Club and Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Committee, Dr. Ade Shamsideen Dosunmu, revealed this during a press briefing on the activities lined up for the landmark celebration.
He noted that the Club has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Lagos State since its establishment in 1974.
According to him, the Club began humbly as a group of like-minded individuals dedicated to uplifting various communities in the state, regardless of socio-economic barriers.
Dr. Dosunmu explained that through its dynamic programs, the Club stands firmly in preserving the cultural heritage and diverse traditions of the people of the state.
He highlighted that the prestigious Club has been instrumental in charitable interventions, including the awarding of scholarships and the provision of free medical care to various communities, thereby fostering positive societal change.
Dr. Ade Dosunmu also congratulated the founding fathers for their unwavering commitment and passion, which have sustained the Club over the years.
He expressed confidence that new opportunities and challenges will arise in the next 50 years but assured that the Club, made up of distinguished personalities, is well-equipped to overcome them.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee noted that they intend to use the Golden Jubilee celebrations to reflect on the Club’s memorable journey and to chart a well-informed, positive course for the future.
On his part, the President of Eko Club, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Olugbenga, expressed joy over the Club’s enviable contributions to society in various ways.
He pointed out that the Club has also added value to the state’s economy, starting with its first President, an industrialist who provided employment to hundreds of residents in different parts of the state.
President Olugbenga explained that one of the Club’s cardinal objectives is to promote education, adding that recreational facilities have been provided to keep children engaged and off the streets.
He recalled one of the Club’s greatest challenges, when it was closed for three months by the police over an issue.
According to him, the Club currently boasts over 1,000 successful members in various fields, adding that membership is largely for Lagosians, as well as non-residents who have made significant contributions to society’s development.
He corrected the erroneous public perception that the Club was only a place for illicit activities, emphasizing that strong family ties and high-level networking take place among its members.
Alhaji Olugbenga concluded by stating that he feels privileged to be President, as the son of one of the Club’s founding fathers.
In his vote of thanks, the Secretary of the Club, Babatunde Gbajumo, said Lagos residents are in for an exciting time during the events marking the 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Some of the activities lined up for the Golden Jubilee include a lecture by former Lagos State Governor and former Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; a health walk; special Jumat and church services; a Cultural Day to showcase Lagos heritage; Founders/Elders Day; a special induction; Sporting Day; and the grand finale, which will feature Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
