Federal Government Announces DICON’s Expansion Into International Arms Trade
The Federal Government has revealed that the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) has begun supplying arms and ammunition to several African countries.
This achievement is attributed to the new DICON Act 2023, which enables the corporation to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s national development and security while generating foreign exchange earnings.
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, made this announcement at a press briefing in Abuja, highlighting the upcoming 60th anniversary of DICON and the inaugural Africa Defence Industries conference.
The conference, scheduled for August 14-15 in Kaduna, will focus on “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology.”
Matawalle emphasized DICON’s capacity and capability to produce arms and ammunition, stating that many African countries are now procuring from the corporation.
He also underscored the government’s commitment to advancing defence capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements.
Established in 1964, DICON has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s defence sector, collaborating with indigenous companies to achieve excellence in military manufacturing. The corporation has expanded its capabilities over the years, venturing into the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment.
This milestone marks a significant expansion of DICON’s operations into the international arms trade, solidifying Nigeria’s position as a key player in Africa’s defence industry.
