Eti-Osa Local Government’s Environmental Health Services Department is set to commence enforcement actions against the use of Styrofoam in drains, starting from Monday, February 12, 2024.
The campaign is led by Hon. Saheed Bankole, the Executive Chairman of Eti-osa local government, Supervisor for Environment, Honorable Sarafa Balogun, and Head of the Environmental Department, Mrs. Adegunju G.M.
In a statement released by the council says that the campaign aims to educate the public about the harmful effects of Styrofoam on drainage systems.
“We are all in this together when it comes to our health,” said Mrs. Adegunju G.M, Head of the Environmental Department. “By making simple changes in our daily habits, we can contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.”
The enforcement actions follow a three-day street campaign that advocates for sustainable alternatives and raises awareness about the environmental impact of Styrofoam and single-use plastics.
The campaign, titled “Say No to Styrofoam Packs and Single-Use Plastics,” encourages the adoption of eco-friendly practices such as using reusable plates and packs, traditional coolers, lunch boxes, silicon and ceramic containers, bamboo products, paper packaging, and aluminum foil.
“We believe that whatever we give to the environment, it gives back to us in multiples,” remarked Supervisor Sarafa Balogun. “By saying no to Styrofoam and single-use plastics, we are protecting not only our environment but also our health and well-being.”
Residents are encouraged to support this initiative and make a positive impact on the community and the planet.
