Residents of Coker-Aguda and Sanya Set for Peaceful Protest, Demand Reversal of PHCN’s Band A Classification

Residents of Coker-Aguda, Sanya, and surrounding areas under the aegis of Aguda United have finalized plans for a massive peaceful protest against the PHCN’s decision to move them to Band A. They are demanding an immediate reversal of the decision.

At a strategic meeting, the group’s leadership urged all residents to participate in the protest, which will take place at the PHCN offices in Sanya and Akangba.

The protesters are calling for a return to their previous electricity tariff band.

According to the group, NERC regulations state that residential areas should not be placed in Band A unless residents make a formal request to PHCN.

They vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met, expressing frustration that the current electricity tariff has become more expensive than rent.

The residents also highlighted the struggle faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are being crushed under the weight of rising fuel costs and excessive electricity tariffs.

Bolaji Ogedengbe, the Council Leader of Coker-Aguda LCDA, declared his full support for the movement, stating that it is within the residents’ rights to protest peacefully.

Alhaji Fasasi Ogunsanya, Chairman of Aguda CDA, emphasized that the protest must remain peaceful, warning that anyone who causes disruption will face sanctions.

Pastor Andrew Biosah, Chairman of WAZOBIA CDA, called for increased awareness ahead of the protest, urging residents to stand united and not undermine their collective cause.

He expressed concern over the skyrocketing electricity tariffs, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with difficult economic conditions.
