First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Stronger Action Against Digital Violence on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Nigeria on Tuesday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, with a renewed call for decisive action against the rising cases of digital abuse targeting women and girls.
In a message to mark the 2025 observance, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.” She noted that the theme reflects a growing and often overlooked threat of online harassment, extortion, cyberstalking, and gender-based hate.
According to the First Lady, digital platforms are meant to promote learning, connection and productivity, not fear. She described the increasing rate of online bullying and blackmail experienced by women and girls as unacceptable, stressing that violence in any form—whether offline or online—erodes dignity, endangers safety, and limits the potential of victims.
Senator Tinubu expressed solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and commended institutions and advocates working tirelessly to protect women and girls across the country.
She urged government bodies, especially the legislature and judiciary, technology companies, civil society organisations and citizens to take bold steps to make digital spaces safer and more respectful for all.
The First Lady extended her goodwill to Nigerians as the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2025.
